Seventy Six - Earth Hour 2015

Earth Hour is a worldwide movement for the planet organized by the World Wide Fund for Nature . It's an annual event which encourages individuals, communities, households and businesses to turn off their non-essential lights for an hour, from 8:30 to 9:30 p.m. on the last Saturday in March, as a symbol for their commitment to the planet. It originated in Sydney and has grown to engage more than 7000 cities and towns worldwide. I got in on the action by having a lovely quiet Saturday night with the lights, TV and various other screens turned off (aside from the time its taking me to do this post!). Reading by candlelight/torchlight is a rather relaxing way to spend some time. Do you take part in this event in your cities?

  1. Not so much, here in Minnesota anyway. We have a fund for it, and lots of things offered at our U of M ....but this is very cool.

  2. I left the lights off for a few hours, but we went out to dinner. Nice idea to read a book by candlelight though.

  4. Oh dear! I guess they didn't realize that in Joondalup, I think you might have been able to see the lights from space :) Sounds like a relaxing evening Aimee, you needed it !

  10. The glow of your candles is so magical. Earth Hour doesn't seem to get much advertisement in my world, but I see that many lights in my immediate Dromana locale seem to at least dim for awhile.

  11. I don't think this has bee promoted in my city. I had not heard of it before. But, I like the idea and I would have done it if I had known.

  12. Looks cosy.
We have the same here, and some public buildings follow this event.
I can`t say that I have heard and read much about it this year.
They advertised it better earlier, some years back.

  15. It's good to be reminded at least one hour a year about how much electricity most of us use!
