9/2016 - Art and Noms

Well this week has certainly gotten away from me! With hectic workloads keeping me at the office late and a new exercise routine getting me up super early I'm a wee bit exhausted! But apparently not too exhausted to make the stinking hot trek all the way through Northbridge up to Chu bakery for some delicious food and a brief sit in the shade in Hyde Park the other day! I don't walk in that direction very often but every time I do I notice different bits of street art. This huge piece is a collaboration between Perth artists Martin E Willis, Jessee Lee Johns, Daek William, Kyle Hughes-Odgers and Pures HD. With so many different styles smooshed together there's so much to see!

 

Yum! Totally worth the sweat.... The Perth Fringe Festival has just started so I'll be busy with some more fun things this week (and hopefully taking a few more photos!!).

159 - Ascalon

This sculpture titled 'Ascalon' was commissioned by the St Georges Cathedral in 2009. Named after the lance used by St George to slay the dragon, the artwork aims “to evoke a sense of righteous power and victory over a force of darkness and oppression." I'm not sure that those are the things it evokes for me personally, but I have always enjoyed the feeling of movement around this piece. And all the better with a glint of afternoon sun!

135 - I Would Like to Win the Lottery

Just putting it out there. Coz you know... a few days go I asked for rain and boy howdy have we gotten some rain the last couple of days. Yesterday I got a craving for scones with jam and cream, today scones with jam and cream miraculously showed up at an office afternoon tea. Surely I'll win the lotto now right? :P The 'honeycomb' on the ceiling in Globe Lane is one of my favourite little arty features around 140 William Street. In the sunny weather they make interesting shadows (even if the yellow makes everyone walking underneath look jaundiced) and in the rain they make fun reflections of the ground so they're a win from a photographers perspective. And they just look cool...

119 - Gangsta

I'm sorry my posts have been so sporadic lately - June/July get a tad crazy for me at work and I've been getting to the end of the day lately and either realising I've not had a chance to take any photos throughout the day, or being just too sick of screens to even think of turning on another computer. So I will try to get here over the next couple of weeks but it may not be a daily deal for a little bit...

These shots were taken as I wandered down Grand Lane at lunchtime today. I wasn't on my way to Toastface Grillah this time (they do very droolworthy toasted sandwiches - so naughty but oh so tasty) but I couldn't resist snapping a quick shot of their awesome gangsta signage. I was actually on my way to the costume shop Hurly Burly to pick up a final touch for the weekend when Supanova rolls around. Looking forward to getting my geek on - I'll definitely bring you some photos from there!

103 - Back Alley Beauty

Its amazing what you can find down seemingly dingy back alleyways in Perth... from plants struggling to survive in cracks in the pavement to incredible works of art on the back of restaurants. This piece, which I have dubbed 'Battle Platypus' as I don't know its actual name (and that's what it looks like to me..) is by Mexican artist Curiot. While it MAY not actually be a Battle Platypus, I believe Curiot is big on mythical creatures - so I'm sure it's something equally as majestic.

 

101 - Sheryo and the Yok

Australian street artists Sheryo and Yok are well known worldwide for their larger than life characters... I have to admit - their style is not usually my favourite, But this piece that I stumbled upon today in Perth's China Town precinct is actually pretty darn cool. I like the kinda cheeky expression on the dragon's face. Certainly a nice bright and colourful end to a long day...

 

Ninety Seven - Textures

I know it looks like kinda...nothing, but I really enjoy the texture in the macro above. And I REALLY enjoy the full piece by Puerto Rican artist Alexis Dias. Such a lot of intricate detail - it really is quite incredible!

Ninety Three - Amok Island

I don't like leaving the office in the dark. I much prefer the 'get in early, leave while there's still some day left' approach. Even if that slice of daylight gets shorter as winter draws closer... But at least today as I wandered back to my car I stumbled upon this pretty sight. I've spotted this fabulous piece by Amok Island before and it does look great in the daylight, but its amazing the magic a few fairy lights can add to a scene! Only 1 more day to the weekend...

 

Eighty Nine - Unexpected Artwork

Even when I'm not looking for them I stumble across awesome pieces of artwork nowadays! Today I ventured slightly further afield than usual on my lunch break and walked over to East Perth to meet some friends. As I hurried my way back to the office after what may have been slightly too long away from the desk I came across this piece by Indonesian artist Eko Nugroho. I feel like this view is not our little city's best side, but I enjoyed this splash of colour against an otherwise pretty dull skyline.

 

Eighty Eight - Anyone Lose a Wicked Witch?

When wandering through Forrest Chase in the city at the moment you will come across something a little unusual... Wicked is finally coming to town here in Perth (I saw the show a few years back in Sydney and I loved it) and as a promo these witchy feet have appeared - no sign of Dorothy though. Funnily enough I used to wear a stocking/shoe combo very like this... I'll count myself lucky that I was never hit by any flying houses!! I hope you're all having a good week!

 

Eighty Six - Here We Go Again!

Aaaaaand we're back in Perth! I may have been in Sydney while the majority of the PUBLIC2015 artworks were being painted but Mum and I did manage to catch a couple still going up on the Tafe in Northbridge. This very cool piece is by Ukrainian artists Waone and AEC (Interesni Kazki). I enjoyed that the artist was being sun safe with his umbrella :). I hope you've all had a fabulous weekend!

 

Seventy Nine - Hey Doofus!

Having a stroll around near the Tafe in Northbridge on my lunch break I came across this lane way with its assorted colourful paintings. While I appreciate the artwork of the piece at the back there by Argentinian artist Ever the most, the big DOOFUS did make me smile.

 

Seventy Three - ROA

Oh my am I looking forward to the PUBLIC2015 street art event. I will be off to Sydney for the start of it but I look forward to catching some artists at work when we get back... This very impressive very huge ROA piece is one of my favourites from last year's event. SO awesome.

Thirty One - Saunders Trouser Carnival

Now I know this is a weird title. But if you look closely the sign in this newly opened walkway that's what it says. Saunders Trouser Carnival. What that means... I'm not sure but it made me chuckle! I was really drawn towards the mixture of metal and plant in the fence along the wall - I think the intertwining textures worked out quite nice in macro... This incredible artwork was a collaboration between Australian artists Vans the Omega and Beastman and adds to the ever growing collection of artworks on the walls of 140 William Street where I am lucky enough to work. The styles of these two artists really complement each other and add up to a wonderful piece of art.

Twenty Two - Locks and Pixels

Ok. I swear, this is my last Wolf Lane post. For a while. There's ever so much art down there I'm very very likely to be back. This last one is by one of my favourite artists from PUBLIC 2014, Pixel Pancho. If you came here from Perth Daily Photo you'll have already seen this one, if not check out my Mum's post here to see Pixel Pancho's work through her very talented eyes. With so much great work around already I'm kinda excited to see what turns up during the PUBLIC 2015 project!

Twenty One - Don't be such a drip!

One the more colorful additions to the walls of Wolf Lane to come out of the PUBLIC 2014 project is this joyous piece by Maya Hayuk. This is a great example of the intricate patterns and beautiful colours that Maya is known around the world for and makes a fabulous entryway to the lane.
